* WRITING FOR DEC 19TH:

Write an e-mail (100 words), for that you should read the last page on the workbook and p. 29 from the student's book.

The e-mail is 100 word long. It is about an exchange program among students in Europe. You are going to spend a month in a person's home during the month of July. You would like to improve your spoken English. Make POLITE enquires about it. You should also provide personal information.

2006-2007 COURSE INFORMATION





1. AIMS AND METHODOLOGY. We will follow the communicative approach, which implies that the basis for learning is COMMUNICATING in the classroom. You need to speak and listen to English EVERY DAY, in class (it is an English-speaking context) and outside the classroom. If you do, your learning will be most effective. At the end of the course you are expected to have attained an articulate intermediate level that allows you to speak English fluently (+ if you dont know a word or make a mistake, be able to implement strategies to overcome the obstacle), understand standard (authentic) audio material and produce a variety of written texts commonly used in daily life. I can tell you how to improve your learning but if you dont practice, there is no way you can learn.



2. USING YOUR ENGLISH. Taking notes in class is very useful to learn to concentrate and pay attention, so it is recommended. Repetition is fundamental in learning and when you write down what you are studying, youre just doing that. You can do it at home, not only in class. Read your notes aloud after each lesson. Contrast them with your textbook. Work on your textbook.



3. Read poems, stories, novels, aloud and in silence. In your audio material to Listen and Repeat every day for at least 10 minutes. You need to be fluent and correct, and there are many useful sentences you can learn. Work on a List of mistakes so that you become aware of them and learn how correct yourself. Keep a record of the Speaking Assignments dialogues/discussions you take part in. Hand in your Writing Assignments. Ask anything you need to know.



4. EXAMS. Your official exam is about your three years of study. The aim is you learn English and the only way to do this is USING YOUR ENGLISH EVERY DAY, anxiety-free, enjoying the process (which doesnt mean effortlessly learning requires an effort). If you learn English, youll be all right in the exam. In February well have a general Exam Practice. One month before the June exam we will be practicing the exam format more explicitly.



5. READING. You should read a lot, in the intermediate and upper-intermediate level. Dont look up every word you need to develop your ability to understand the general sense of texts. Look up the words that are most common or whose meanings are fundamental for the understanding of the text. After reading, youll have to prepare a book review OR a summary for each. (You can use one to hand in as one of the written assignments.)


6. LISTENING/SPEAKING. This will be our fundamental activity in class. We need to take advantage of the chance to meet other people we can speak English with. We will train in listening comprehension techniques & communicative strategies.

As for speaking, we will do dialogues, read out from written texts, learn to hold rational discussions & debates.

Presentations: we will do oral presentations of texts on one of the books youve read, a topic of your interest (which are your likes/passions?), a project...



7. WRITING. You can hand in your writing assignments BEFORE the deadline, not after. It can be from the textbook, as assigned, and/or from what we do in class you need to write. They have to have the number of words required on the writing exams: 175 words, or 100 words. Try different types of formats/texts.
